Just Barely in Tune

Don't have to be good
Or have to be famous
Just barely in tune
Is good enough for us
Just barely in tune
Is good enough for us

Get off of that couch
watching MTV
Pull your ear buds out
Make some harmony
Play along with friends
Make it what you hear
Music never ends
Play it loud no fear

Don't have to be good
Don't have to be famous
Just barely in tune
Is good enough for us
Just barely in tune
Is good enough for us

Sing in the kitchen
For the fun of it
Put it on YouTube
Like you're makin it
Strum a chord to start
Stomp to keep the beat
Blow a G blues harp
Right off of my feet

Don't have to be good
Don't have to be famous
Just barely in tune
Is good enough for us
Just barely in tune
Is good enough for us

Write your self a song
Find something to say
Get a used guitar
n' learn how to play
Give yourself some time
And you will see
When you finally rhyme
You won't let it be

Don't have to be good
Don't have to be famous
Just barely in tune
Is good enough for us
Just barely in tune
Is good enough for us

Just As Sweet

An orange in an apple peel
Would be called an apple
Until you take a bite
To find it's not the apple
The orange always knew
It was in the wrong wrapper

The fruit is just as sweet
Just as sweet

Outside the expectation
Forms reception field
The inside is realization
With surprises contrary
to what you just might feel
We're all kinds of sugar

And we're all just as sweet
Just as sweet

Don't know what to feel
On new ground there to walk
Hoping it's ok to let it settle
Let it all become so real
That day we'll again meet
Pick up where we left off

Of course you're just as sweet
Just as sweet

Con Man Blues (C Fifty One)

Harper and the cons
Are in a big rush
To save me from the world
With privacy to crush

I want freedom to reject
That I need to worry
I want freedom to protest
Why they're in such a hurry

C fifty one
Got his eyes on you
C fifty one
Got his ears on you
C fifty one
I can not agree
C fifty one
I’m not the enemy

There will come a time
When the trial is due
With evidence to find
What cons are up to

They’ll stand before the jury
In shackles of deceit
A crime to make a country
What they think it should be

C fifty one
Got his eyes on you
C fifty one
Got his ears on you
C fifty one
I can not agree
C fifty one
I’m not the enemy

Repression it's for sure
To silence other sides
No more will we endure
This power tripping ride

It’s not just the bill
It's what we don’t know
That we've had our fill
The cons have got to go

C fifty one
Got his eyes on you
C fifty one
Got his ears on you
C fifty one
I can not agree
C fifty one
I’m not the enemy

c cinquante et un
a ses yeux sur vous
c cinquante et un
a ses oreilles sur vous
c cinquante et un
Je ne dis pas oui
c cinquante et un
je ne suis pas l'ennemi

Beautiful Fledglings

This song is a co-write with Nic Yown. I wrote the first two verses and chorus for Nic at time his kids were moving out and on. He added the last verse and made it a song he sang at his daughter's wedding.

Little babies little lives
Start the journey of new life
Polly wogs grow legs and feet
And leave the water sweet

It’s in the air fresh and new
And no matter what they do
With new wings made to fly
Make good with all they try

Fledglings drop from the nest
Enter life's next true test
What they just have to do
Fly off on sky so blue
Fly off on sky so blue

When out on the ledge
So close to the edge
Remember what was said
Keep it all in your head

Take the time it takes
Don't rush the life you make
be real, and never fake
Live life for your own sake

Fledglings drop from the nest
Enter life's next true test
What they just have to do
Fly off on sky so blue
Fly off on sky so blue

As you Soar into the sky
I look at you and sigh
I’ll try hard not to cry
This will not be good bye

A chapter’s come to an end
As you turn around the bend
My child and my friend
Hold on to the love I send

Fledglings drop from the nest
Enter life's next true test
What they just have to do
Fly off on sky so blue
Fly off on sky so blue

Earth Talks

Pebbles on the beach
The rocks in the field
Got something to teach
A protest to appeal
Want to be old some day
To be smooth and small
Lie in the sand they say
Not in a road or wall

Rocks, these rocks, are talking to me
Rocks, these rocks, are talking to me
Rocks, these rocks, are talking to me
Rocks these rocks, don't like what they see

Trees in the forest
Surrounded by the rot
Eatin car exhaust
But not all we got
Fighting wind and rain
Choking on the smoke
From endless human trains
They never get to vote

Trees, these trees, are talking to me
Trees, these trees, are talking to me
Trees, these trees, are talking to me
Trees, these trees, don't like what they see

Clouds up in the sky
Pushed by ghostly wind
We all know why
The oil burning sin
Forming thick and black
Empty all their pain
Mount a new attack
To heat and load again

Clouds, these clouds, are talking to me
Clouds, these clouds, are talking to me
Clouds, these clouds, are talking to me
Clouds, these clouds, don't like what they see

Leaders of the planet
Were in Paris a while back
Before the new agreement
Mother Earth had a speech
“Act instead of bluff
Got to stop the talk”
They say “what’s the rush
To run we have to walk”

Stop, this talk, just talking to me
Stop, this talk, just talking to me
Stop, this talk, just talking to me
The future, is closer, than ever you see

That meeting and the show
All the promise and the hope
Of someone else's action
Ends another episode
Plans they made were plans
But who will act that way
The path is there to take
Earth needs more than one day

Stop, this talk, just talking to me
Stop, this talk, just talking to me
Stop, this talk, just talking to me
The future, is closer, than ever you see

To Be So Released

Riding the sad train
And stuck on the track
So dark goes the brain
That'll never come back

Our questions left dealing
How to right what was wrong
But mostly it's the feeling
The ache that they're gone
But mostly it's the feeling
The ache that they're gone

All calm without turmoil
New found inner peace
No longer in pain now
To be, to be, be so released

Its a mystery of life
thought becomes prison
And for all their strife
Can be no good reason

Life's grip held them so tight
Even when they were low
And it doesn't seem right
For love to let go
And it doesn't seem right
For love to let go

Horses Always Make You Ride

These horses never sleep
They wake you with the thought
Of something you might do
Something that you're not

Follow running breath
Out to the edge of silence
Between a gasp of hope
And nothing making sense

Horses, horses
Always make you ride
Horses, horses
Always in your mind
Horses, horses
No one lets them go
Horses, horses
Only you can know

In a place of weakness
There are clouds and wind between
Out in the open spaces
There is a way to dream

In the moment’s ring
The present lets you live
A future has no feeling
It has no love to give

Horses, horses
Always make you ride
Horses, horses
Always in your mind
Horses, horses
No one lets them go
Horses, horses
Only you can know

There’s excitement in the sound
As run escapes the rut
With the freedom found
To go where you are not

Just when you do think
You control your will
There comes a wilder horse
An even bigger thrill

Horses, horses
Always make you ride
Horses, horses
Always in your mind
Horses, horses
No one lets them go
Horses, horses
Only you can know

Ride the Sky

There's music to be found
Not just in Nashville
Kelowna hanging 'round
Moon was on the bill
Then again up in T O
Set the tour alarm
Again they hit the road
To the country and a barn

Spirit on the road
People find the link
You cannot tame a tiger
With animal instinct
The moon’s a constant force
And no one ever asks why
It waxes and it wanes
Hangs and rides the sky

Crossed country on a train
A long and rolling gig
No fortune little fame
Free spirit living big
With karma comes the play
Out on feathered wings
Flying the high way
And everything it brings

Spirit on the road
People find the link
You cannot tame a tiger
With animal instinct
The moon’s a constant force
And nobody’s asking why
It waxes and it wanes
Hangs and rides the sky

Music is a fragile art
Played on and on and on
Sharp edge is the craft
Here before it's gone
Rhythm rides the rails
Guitar mandolin
Following the tracks of
A song that keeps comin'

Spirit on the road
People find the link
You cannot tame a tiger
With animal instinct
The moon’s a constant force
And nobody’s asking why
It waxes and it wanes
Hangs and rides the sky

A Patriot So True

He was a man
of the land,
He'd go out in the country
and talk to the people
See the jobs they do
He'd talk to them and listen
and feel their hardship too
He's Canada's friend,
and something he'd send
a message meant for you

Hear the call Tom left
Like a loon on the lake
And what his words say
About the land that we make
and the lesson that we take
Not just on Canada day

Keep the maple leaf high
And never let him die
In every thing you do
be a patriot, be a patriot, a patriot so true

He was a man,
of the land
He knew all of our country
All of the places
He didn't need a map
Down gravel roads or black top
With music he would go
He carried his guitar
Even when he was a star
Canada's heart and soul

Didn't go to the States
For the money he could make
Stayed north of the border
His home would never shift
His country was his gift
Deserved Canada's order

Keep the maple leaf high
And never let him die
In every thing you do
Be a patriot, be a patriot, a patriot so true

(bridge)
On a rickety plywood plank
He sang his heart and stomped away
the maple leaf for now,
for each and every day
no one loved it better,
one thing you can say
In every thing he'd do,
he was a patriot so true

He was a man
of the land
People across the country
Wanted to see him
Every now an then
He was like and old friend
You just want to talk to
For the stories he would tell
All the people would yell
He was the one to see

The CDs in the case
The records on the rack
For us, and for the future
The songs that we hear
The feeling of good cheer
Will echo on forever

Keep the maple leaf high
And never let him die
In every thing you do
Be a patriot, be a patriot, a patriot so true

Where Every Colour Goes

One night we’re heading for the tunnel
Got turned around drove the river road
There was fire and gun shots
Across the river in Detroit
At the time I didn't know
I never heard the word riot

Because you were black
you were not wrong
Because you were white
you were not right
Equality Equality
Oh yea, Equality
It's a rainbow
Where every colour goes

On the campus a protest of peace and love
They marched together to the end a war
Guns were turned on them
But they weren't there to fight
They were just standing up
They thought that was their right

Because you stood up
you were not wrong
Because you chose war
Don't know what its for
Humanity Humanity
Oh yea, Humanity
It's a rainbow
Where every colour goes

(Bridge)
Time flows like a river
A river has two sides
On water you can float
We can make a tunnel
We can make a bridge
And we can build a boat

What now to protest in a world so complex
Got to be something about the money
Who has and who does not
Those rules are being made
By people with the power
Their game the one that’s played

Because they won't change
Are we so wrong
In the spirit giving
You can feel the loving
Generosity, generosity
Oh yea, Generosity
It's a rainbow
Where every colour goes
